Extreme Rage V2 Electric 3 Speed Hopper Modification
Paintball Section : Modifications Page: Extreme Rage Hopper

Extreme Rage overdrive electronic hopper is one of many recently comming out "economy" electronic hoppers. it costs about $20-25 has 2 versions v1 with belt driven funnel and shaped like vl revolution and v2 with gear driven funnel and shaped to look more like halo style hoppers (who says advertising tactics don't work?). ER Overdrive uses a spining funnel with ridges spirolling down which are suppose to feed the balls down in a cyclone like action feeding at 12bps at max speed. It has 3 speeds at which it will feed the balls(basically the funnel spins faster at each setting). And its shell is made almost 100% out of polyeurethane like plastic which is impossible to crack - which is important cause i seen halos and ricotches cracked after their first game. So why is it so cheap? Because it is always on!!! There is no ball in neck sensor or sound activated system - nothing! Well its not the end of the world but it gets annoying fast ! (especially in woods ball where you try to be stealthy. The sound of balls rattling inside all the time will get to you sooner or later. But it is still a great hopper perfect for any low end e-marker and even those non electronic ones. You just have to get rid of that pesky always on feature. And here is how:

The idea for this mod came from a review on www.pbreview.com, mod is to build an electronic eye setup which will detect when there is no ball(s) in the feed neck and then turn on the hopper instead of having it run all the time. This saves on batteries , and especially on the noise which the hopper makes during continous operation which will drive any sane person mad.

Original creator of this mod inserted the board into the hopper to hide it, i spent the extra $2.5 at radioshack and got a project box which i attached to the hopper with 2 screws tightened from the inside of the hopper. 2nd innovation were computer IDE tapes instead of regular wires to decrease resistance and deal with dangling and hanging mess of wires which initially appeared.

I decided to use a colar which will slip on the neck of the hopper. used a standard VL 45 deg elbow with a butter fly screw for easy tightening, cut off the part which clamps onto the hopper and tossed the rest, took that ring and drilled it all the way through. Took ordinry bic pen, pulled the ink filled insert out, cut off 1 inch pieces of the tube, glue gun glued them to the outer sides of the drilled ring where the holes are - those will house the emitter 'n reciever. Put in the emitter (sodered the resistor first) and reciever and sealed backs of tubes with hot glue. Tested the setup, when figured it was working i covered tubes with 5 min epoxy for additional reinforcement.
